Rolla man arrested after standoff, shooting at law enforcement
According to Rolla Police Captain Doug James, an officer initially initiated a traffic stop Monday night after observing a vehicle traveling on Vienna Road, which he recognized as being the suspect vehicle from a stealing earlier Monday at Walmart.
In a release, James said after the officer initiated the traffic stop in the 2100 block of Vienna Road, the suspect vehicle pulled behind an apartment complex. According to James, as the officer approached the vehicle, he observed three occupants and the suspect from the earlier stealing at Walmart sitting in the back passenger seat.
James said the suspect then exited the vehicle and began running. The officer initiated a foot pursuit, attempting to stop the suspect by deploying his taser, which failed to incapacitate the suspect, according to James.
James said in a release on Tuesday that the suspect then pulled a pistol and shot at the pursuing officer, and the officer then transitioned to his duty pistol and returned fire.
According to James, the suspect then ran into a back yard where officers cornered him, and a standoff began with officers from surrounding agencies arriving to assist. At 5:49 p.m., Monday, officers took the suspect into custody. James said the suspect was later identified as Eric Hollingsworth, 41, of Rolla.
According to James, Hollingsworth was later incarcerated in the Phelps County Jail on charges of resisting arrest by fleeing, assault in the first degree and armed criminal action.
James said the officer sustained an injury to his knee during the incident, but the gunfire struck neither party.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control is currently investigating the incident, James said.
Surrounding agencies that responded to the incident were the Rolla Police Department, Phelps County Sheriff’s Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Missouri University of Science and Technology Police, Rolla City Fire and Rescue and Phelps Health Ambulance, James said.
