Health Department confirms active cases at multiple area schools, residential care facilities

The Phelps Maries County Health Department reported Thursday 54 newly diagnosed cases of Phelps County residents with COVID-19 since Monday, raising the county’s total to 846 known cases. 

County health officials said they are monitoring 122 active COVID-19 cases — Forty-two in Rolla, 70  in St. James, one in the Edgar Springs area and nine in the Newburg area. 

According to the health department, staff are investigating active COVID-19 cases in the Missouri Veterans Home, St. James Living Center and Ferndale Residential Care Facility. 

The health department said staff are also working active cases at Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla 31 School District, Newburg R-II School District and St. James R-I School District. 

The department said staff will continue to provide the COVID-19 dashboards for the area as long as time allows, but “case investigations and contact tracing must be priority and are requiring more resource dedication and time as cases continue to increase.”

As of 5 p.m. Thursday, the department said 21 people have died from COVID-19, and there are ten people currently hospitalized. The department has confirmed 18 deaths in St. James, two deaths in Rolla and one death in the Newburg area. 

The department reported that 762 people previously quarantined in Phelps County have now been released from isolation.
