2021-22 University Concert Series offers orchestral fare, musicals and more
The University Concert Series rolled out its 2021-22 season in an announcement Thursday, joining classical and chamber music, touring musicals, local talent and more.
The Series' 114th season is bookended by a pair of very different Missouri musical institutions. It kicks off Oct. 20 with a performance by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and closes May 20 with a Missouri Theatre date on the Ozark Mountain Daredevils' 50th anniversary tour.
Presented by the University of Missouri, each series date takes place in one of those two venues.
In between, the Series offers performances by a number of stalwart mid-Missouri ensembles. MU Choral Union presents its "Comfort and Hope" concert Nov. 18, then offers the program "The People Speak" April 28; Missouri Contemporary Ballet performs twice — Oct. 29-30 and April 8-9; and MU's Show-Me Opera performs "The Marriage of Figaro" March 12-13.
Also on the way: touring performances of "Stomp" (Feb. 15-16); "Fiddler on the Roof" (March 22); and "Waitress" (May 8).
Holiday offerings include "A Carpenters Christmas," featuring music by the classic pop duo (Dec. 7), and The Trans-Siberian Experience (Dec. 14). Children will delight at "Neighbor Day" Feb. 23, an extension of the "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood" universe, and Missoula Children's Theatre's presentation of "Red Riding Hood" (May 7).
Other notable dates include chamber group The Juliani Ensemble on Feb. 13 as well as a performance by The Queen's Cartoonists on April 19, a multimedia experience which joins musical performance, comedy, animation and throwbacks to classic cartoons.
Like nearly all performing arts presenters, the Series is engaged in a gradual crescendo after the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped and rerouted the industry.
"We were thrilled with attendance at our small spring 2021 series and look forward to a full year of entertainment in the months ahead," director Robert Wells wrote in the season brochure.
