Rolla boys and girls get tournament off to a great start

The Rolla Lady Bulldogs began the day with their game at Missouri University of Science & Technology where they took off in a hurry and defeated Transportation and Law High School from St. Louis 82-17.

Rolla began the game with a 23-0 run and ended the quarter with a 32-5 lead.

Rebecca Janke and Carlie Libhart led Rolla with 10 points each in the first period. Ellie Rodgers, Madison Mace and Savannah Campbell all combined for 12 more points in the quarter.

Rolla continued their sprinting pace with another 13-0 run in the second quarter and was led by Mace with six points in the period. Taniya Corley and Kate Brand added four points each and six different Lady Bulldogs scored in the period to cruise to a 54-13 halftime lead.

The Lady Bulldogs were led by both Libhart and Janke with 10 points in the first half and Mace added eight points of her own.

Rolla shut off the Lady Hornets 15-0 in the third period to lead 69-13 going into the final frame as Campbell led the Lady Bulldogs with five points and four other girls combined for the other 10. Sarah Coverdell added five points in the game, while Kate Brand, Mace and Corley combined for eight more points.

Rolla had four girls in double figures. Libhart led the team with 13 points and Janke added 12 more. Both Mace and Campbell had 11 points each. Rodgers, Cocerdell, Brand, and Corley all combined for another 33 points and Pritchett closed the scoring out with another basket.

Rolla was scheduled to face Southwest High School from Paisa, Illinois on Friday at 2:30 p.m. Paisa won its game over Warrensburg 48-30.

The Licking Lady Wildcats defeated Kansas City Central 90-15 to face Lutheran North at 4 p.m. at Missouri S&T. Lutheran North defeated Sedalia Smith-Cotton 68-51.

T&L will face Warrensburg at 1 p.m. at Rolla High School, while KC Central will take on Smith-Cotton at 2:30 at the high school.

Boys Tournament

The Bulldogs picked up a big win over a tough Mexico Team in a battle of the Bulldogs. They won the game in comeback fashion 54-51.

Rolla trailed Mexico 17-8 after making an early comeback from a Mexico 15-0 lead early on. Colby Shivers led Rolla with four points in the period and Adam Hounsom and Danny Foster both added two more points.

Rolla outscored the Mexico Bulldogs 17-10 in the second frame. Muluken Pritchett led all players in the period with nine points late in the quarter, but Mexico retained its advantage 27-25 at the break. Pritchett led Rolla with nine points, while Shivers added six more for Rolla.

Both Rolla and Mexico scored 16 points in a fast-paced third quarter as Mexico led 43-41 after the period. Shivers added eight more points to his total.

The Bulldogs then worked to complete a big comeback as Rolla and Mexico traded the lead several times. Rolla picked up the lead for good after Foster connected on a layup with around 15 seconds in the game to grab a 51-50 lead. Rolla scored two more free throws from Adam Hounsom with three seconds left in the contest.

Rolla was led by Shivers and Pritchett, who both scored 14 points in the win. Foster added 12 more. Jack Hounsom, Conner Joyce, Brown, and Ty Lochlear all combined for 14 points in the victory.

Rolla will face Warrensburg at S&T with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m. Warrensburg won a close game over St. Pius.

The other semifinal will feature a matchup between the Waynesville Tigers and Raytown South Cardinals. Waynesville won its game 59-44 over KC Central. The Cardinals defeated Carthage by 40 in their first round game.
