John E. Sheehan, 84, peacefully passed away Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019 at the Harry S Truman VA Hospital.

Visitation will take place on Friday, Feb. 15, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Nilson Funeral Home in Columbia. The funeral will be held on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Parish with John’s brother Archbishop Emeritus Michael J. Sheehan celebrating the Mass. Family friend Fr. Chris Cordes will concelebrate.

He was born June 16, 1934 in Joplin, to Mildred Jarboe Sheehan and John E. Sheehan Sr., both of whom preceded him in death.

He married the love of his life Sue (Burnes) Sheehan on Oct. 25, 1958. She preceded him in death on Dec. 16, 2003. As he was entering the final stages of his life he asked us how he was going to find Sue in Heaven. We told him we have no doubt she is saving a chair for him at the bridge table.

John is survived by his five children, Ann Sheehan of Columbia, Stephen Sheehan of Columbia, Julie Sheehan of Lacy, WA, David (Jacqui) Sheehan of Warrensburg, and Kathleen (Stephen) Wilmes of Yakima, WA.

He was preceded in death by his older sister, Mary Yaden. He is survived by his brothers, Most Reverend Michael Sheehan of Albuquerque, NM and Jody Sheehan (Fran) of Lenexa, KS; as well as many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

John graduated from Oklahoma A&M College in 1956 through the Air Force ROTC program. It was when he was stationed in Morocco that he met Sue, who was a teacher with the DOD. He was honorably discharged in 1959.

He received his MBA from the University of Dayton in 1968.

John worked in sales for all of his adult life. The last forty years he worked for Bankers Advertising, a company he loved and worked for up until his passing.

The family would like to express great gratitude to the VA Hospital, for all of the wonderful care given not only to John, but to our entire family during this difficult time.
