Missouri University of Science and Technology invites the public to join a celebration of the achievements of its spring 2020 graduates during a virtual event in May.
An in-person commencement ceremony for spring 2020 graduates will be held at a later date, and details will be shared when available.
The university will host the virtual celebration at 11 a.m. CDT Saturday, May 16, on Missouri S&T’s Facebook page at facebook.com/MissouriSandT. This special virtual event is a way for the campus community to honor graduates and mark this important moment.
Missouri S&T Chancellor Mo Dehghani will speak at the celebration along with the five graduating students who were chosen as commencement speakers. The students are Katherine Bartels, a graduate student in environmental engineering from Independence, Missouri; Adam Brooks, a senior in engineering management from Columbia, Missouri; Amy Costa, a senior in psychology from Bridgeton, Missouri; Sylvia Skouby, a graduate student in industrial-organizational psychology from St. James, Missouri; and Delaney Simmons, a senior in nuclear engineering from Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
To be chosen as a student speaker, graduating students submitted an application with a copy of their proposed speech and their resume. A selection committee reviewed anonymous applications and selected finalists to audition.
“This celebration is a recognition of our students’ hard work and dedication during this trying time,” says Dehghani. “It is not a substitution for commencement; these students will have the opportunity to celebrate in-person once we return to campus and can safely participate as a campus community.”
In March, Missouri S&T moved all courses online as the majority of students departed campus to continue their studies remotely to help address the COVID-19 public health emergency. Most faculty and staff also are working remotely except for those needed on campus to ensure that essential operations and research continue.
