KANSAS CITY — One person has died after strong winds knocked a tree into a home in western Missouri on Monday as a storm system moved through the area.

The Bates County Sheriff's office said emergency response personnel were called Monday morning to a home in rural Butler, about 65 miles (104.61 kilometers) south of Kansas City. Rescuers used an excavator and chain saws to remove the tree but the person was found dead inside. No details about the victim have been released.

Winds from the storm system reached up to 70 mph as most of western Missouri was under a severe thunderstorm warning. Rain and hail also were reported.

KYTV reports the winds tore the roof off a Mansfield school building. There were several reports of downed trees, with thousands of people in the Kansas City metro area without power.
