A holiday salute to Rolla’s sister city, Sondershausen Germany will fill a two-day celebration.
Lichternacht “Light the Night” on Pine Street will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6 in downtown Rolla. Downtown businesses will be open for extended hours to feature performances by musicians, actors, story tellers and craft activities.
Children are encouraged to collect punches on their Tannenbaum cards and redeem them for free s’mores kits which can be made around the fire pit on Seventh Street. A highlight of the evening is the lighting of the community Christmas tree at 7 p.m. at the Rolla Public Library Plaza.
Following the tree lighting there will be a polka party for the entire family in the Christkindl Markt tents on Seventh Street featuring music of the World’s Finest Rolla German Band. Polka lessons will be provided by Alicia Smith on the Public House Brewing Company parking lot.
On Saturday, following the 49th Annual Rolla Area Chamber of Commerce Christmas parade, which is themed “Christmas on the Polar Express”, the Rolla Christkindl Markt will be held at the Public House Brewing Company.
Attendees will find traditional German and American music, craft vendors and German food cooked on-site, entertainment and handcrafted items for sale. All of these activities will be held in large tents on the Public House Brewing Company parking lot.
The event will conclude with the After Glow party Saturday evening.
“For those who have roots in Germany, have lived or traveled there, or have a heart for strengthening international relationships, the Sister City Program is open to anyone interested, said Jeff Sandquist, the event coordinator. “These two events help kick off the holiday season and it provides fun for the whole family.”
