Authorities say a husband died and his wife is seriously injured after their vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a culvert, a tree and a fiber cable post before the vehicle struck a second culvert, and then went airborne on Interstate 44 in Phelps County.

The Doolittle Rural Fire Protection District (DRFPD) and Phelps Health EMS responded to report of a passenger car rollover accident at mile marker 170 on eastbound I-44 Friday, the DRFPD says. When first responders arrived to the scene, they found one passenger car off the roadway that had rolled multiple times. Both the male driver and female passenger were still inside the vehicle and seriously injured, the DRFPD says.

First responders quickly removed both the man and the woman from the vehicle and transported them to Phelps Health, the DRFPD says. The male driver, identified as the passenger’s husband, was pronounced dead Friday night, as a result of his injuries, the DRFPD says. The man's wife was later flown to Mercy Hospital in Springfield where she remains in serious condition, the DRFPD said on Saturday. Both were wearing safety devises, the highway patrols says.
