The St. James track team braved the weather to compete in the Class 3 District 5 Meet in Versailles on Saturday, May 11. St. James was able to send a total of 17 competitors to Sectionals after a great day in the rain.
As he has all season, Grant Conway led the way for St. James, as he swept first place finishes in all four of his races. First Conway won the 100m dash, claiming the top spot with a time of 11.27. He then won the 200m dash with a time of 22.64, despite finishing the prelims in fourth. After that, the hurdles were all St. James. Conway and Connor Gorrell each qualified in both races. They started by finishing back to back in the 110s. Despite the weather, Conway still won the 110s with a time of 14.24, a full two seconds in front of Gorrell's second place finish of 16.26. Conway then claimed the top spot in the 300m hurdles with a time of 39.92. Gorrell finished fourth in the race to qualify for Sectionals with a time of 42.92.
The Tigers were also able to qualify with three of their relay teams. The took third in both the 4x400 and 4x200, while placing fourth in the 4x100. The 4x400 team of James Altis, Gorrell, Dayton Lynch and Mason Parker finished with a time of 3:42.12. The 4x200 team, which finished in 1:35.98 consisted of Nick Halbrook, Parker, Tyler Recker and Austin Ridenhour. The same team also took fourth in the 4x100 with a time of 45.77.
Ridenhour and Recker didn't just make it in the relays though. Ridenhour won the long jump with a leap of 19'9", while Recker was a couple inches behind in third with a jump of 19'6.5. Ridenhour also finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 40'5.5" to qualify in all four of his events.
St. James nearly had a thrower qualify, but Jedidya Hitch needed an extra foot and half an inch in the shot put. He finished in sixth with a throw of 39'5.5".
Hunter Pitts got out to a great start for St. James, placing second in the 100m dash with a time of 13:30. She narrowly missed qualifying in the 200m dash, but was .28 seconds behind the fourth place finish as she crossed the line in third with a time of 27.74.
Mackenna Rodgers then moved into the hurdles where she finished second in the finals with a time of 17.77. She jumped up from finishing in third in prelims.
The Lady Tigers also ran three of the relays, qualifying for Sectionals in two of them. The team of Pitts, Raina Forstrom, Kaylynn Crocker and Hannah Marcee took third in the 4x100 with a time of 53.86. St. James capped off the day by qualifying with their 4x400 team. The unit of Pitts, Crocker, Marcee and Emily Light took fourth in the race with a time of 4:32.8.
St. James only had one player to qualify in the field events. Forstrom took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 14'11.75" She edged out Sydney Miller of Willow Springs by a quarter of an inch. Rodgers and Forstrom also finished for a tie for seventh in the long jump with leaps of 29'8".
