Fine Linen Theatre is thrilled to announce the opening of the Broadway smash musical “Newsies” with members in the cast from St. James, Rolla, Edgar Springs, Waynesville, Dixon, Belle, Cuba, Steelville, Salem and Licking.
The theatre production is based on the 1992 Disney movie “Newsies” that portrays the actual events of the newsboys’ strike of 1899 in New York City. The youth led campaign lasted two weeks after Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raised newspaper prices at the expense of the newsboys who delivered the paper.
The strike involved thousands of newsboys, who were successful in forcing Pulitzer’s publication the New York World and Hearst’s publication the New York Evening Journal to offer full buy-backs to their sellers, thus eventually increasing the amount of money that Newsboys received for their work.
The theatrical production opened on Broadway 20 years after the Disney film and won Best Score and Best Choreography at the 2012 Tony Awards after the Broadway musical was nominated for eight Tonys.
The show has lyrics by Jack Feldman of the Lion King II and “Copacabana,” and the book by Harvey Feirstein. The show features music by the impeccable Alan Menken of “Little Shop of Horrors,” Beauty and the Beast,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “Pocahontas,” “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” “Hercules,” “Enchanted,” “Tangled,” and various other productions.
The Tony award-winning score also features the classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” Seize the Day,” and “Sante Fe.”
Fine Linen’s production includes 52 cast members on stage, 13 musicians in the pit orchestra and a talented group of technicians and crew. The production features high energy choreography, fantastic vocals, an impressive set, iconic costumes and a true story that is uplifting as well as encouraging.
Performances are at Leach Theatre's, Castleman Hall, on Missouri University of Science and Technology’s campus in Rolla. The show opens Thursday, March 28 and runs through April 6 with performances at 7 p.m. and an additional 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, March 30.
Tickets to the “Newsies” can be purchased on Fine Linen Theatre’s website at www.finelinentheatre.com. Tickets for the show can also be purchased by calling or texting 800-806-1915.
