The Newburg boys basketball team traveled to Iberia for a Frisco League game on Thursday, Dec. 13. The Wolves dug a hole early that they couldn't dig out of in a 68-48.
Iberia sprinted out to an early lead with a 26-point first quarter. The Wolves couldn't keep pace with 11 points. Iberia used the three ball to dominate the first half. After hitting four threes in the first quarter, the Rangers made four more in the second. Newburg had a better second quarter with 15 points, hitting a pair of their own threes, but couldn't close the gap. Iberia went into the half with 46-26 lead.
Iberia's offense slowed down in the second half, but Newburg couldn't find the offensive spark to take advantage. Tristan Wofford had a big third quarter with nine points, but his teammates only added two more points in the quarter. Iberia added 15 points in the third, five of which came from the free throw line, to extend their lead to 60-37. The four quarter mirrored the third, as Caleb Austin scored nine points for Newburg, but his teammates only added two points. Iberia scored eight points of their own in the quarter to finish off a 68-48 win over Newburg.
Austin led Newburg with 13 points in the loss. Wofford and Hunter Mentola each added 11 points. Justin Cantu chipped in with six points, Cole Davis scored three and Kiernan Twyman and Gunner Pound each added two.
