The St. James wrestling team traveled to Pleasant Hills over the weekend to take part in the Steve Leslie Invitational over the weekend. The Tigers competed well in the tough tournament led by three top 10 finishes.
Kaylynn Crocker led St. James with an eighth place finish at 106. After a first round bye, Crocker had a first round pin over Spencer Cairns of Chillicothe. Crocker was then pinned by the eventual champion, Owen Uhls from Fulton, in the first period of the third round, before heading into bracket play. Crocker opened the bracket losing a 9-2 decision to Sheldon Rader from Chillicothe to head into the consolation bracket. She then was pinned in her first match of the consolation bracket, before a tough 6-4 loss to end up in eighth place.
Frank Parsons wrestled for St. James at 120. He was pinned in the first period of both of his matches in pool play. Parsons then missed pool play to finish in ninth.
Next up for the Tigers was Elijah Wilcox at 126. Wilcox was pinned in the first period of both of his poll play matches, which put the St. James wrestler in a consolation pool. He was then pinned in both of his consolation matches to finish in 11th place.
James Poelling then wrestled at 132. He was pinned in the first period of each of his matches in pool play to be placed in the consolation bracket. Poelling was pinned in both of his matches in the consolation bracket to finish in 13th.
Heather Pankey wrestled at 138 for St. James. She went 1-2 in pool play with her win coming by pin in the second period over Brayden Elliot from William Chrisman. She was pinned in her other two pool play matches, sending the Lady Tiger into the consolation bracket. She was pinned in the first round, before pinning Noah Rash from Summit Christian Academy at the beginning of the second period to go to the 13th place match. Pankey earned her third pin of the tournament in the first period over Ethan Hines of Sullivan to claim 13th place.
Nick Halbrook got St. James final top 10 finish at 145. He earned a 2-0 victory to open pool play, before losing his next two matches on pins. Halbrook then went to the consolation bracket. He opened with a pin of Jonathan Krygien of Sullivan, before a 6-4 sudden victory over Caleb Rosenbaugh from Shawnee Mission Northwest. Those two wins put him in the ninth place match, where he pinned Casy Noel from Summit Christian Academy at the beginning of the second period to finish in ninth.
St. James was open at the next two weights, before Dustin Davies wrestled at 170. He was pinned in the first period of his three pool play matches to go to the consolation bracket. Davies was then pinned in hist first consolation match, before getting pinned in the 13th place match to finish in 14th.
St. James had 15th place finishes in their remaining weight classes. Donnie Martinez wrestled at 182, where he was pinned in all five of his matches. Thomas Corliss wrestled at 195, where he was pinned four times. Donald Grouns rounded things out for St. James at heavy weight. He was pinned in his first five matches, before pinning Kooper Reed of Summit Christian Academy in the 15th place match.
As a team, the Tigers finished in 15th place.
