The Newburg boys basketball team kicked off their season on Friday, Nov. 16 with the Frisco League v Show Me Shootout. Defense was the name of the game when the Wolves faced off against New Bloomfield, but Newburg was able to come away with their first win of the season 46-40.

Offense was at a premium on Friday night. As a result, both teams combined for just nine points in the opening quarter. Newburg was able to finish the quarter with a 5-4 lead thanks to a couple of buckets from Tristan Wofford. The Wolves then made a statement in the second with an 18-point second quarter to take a 23-16 lead into the half. Hunter Mentola led that charge in the second frame, knocking down a three and scoring nine points.

The scoring dried up again in the third quarter, as each team scored eight points to keep the Newburg lead at seven points heading into the final frame at 31-24. New Bloomfield pushed for a comeback with 16 points in the fourth quarter, but the Wolves got enough offense to hold onto the win. Mentola scored six point in the quarter, while Caleb Austin added five more on the way to a 46-40 win.

Mentola led the team in scoring with 15 points, but Austin wasn't far behind with 13. Wofford added another 10 points, while Jared Lott and Nathan Russell each added three.
