ROLLA, Mo. – Scoring early and often, Missouri S&T rolled to a Homecoming victory Saturday afternoon as the Miners used a huge first half performance to defeat William Jewell 59-21 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.
While the weather may have been chilly at Allgood-Bailey Stadium, the Miners were anything but that during the first half as they rolled up 432 of their 565 total yards in the first 30 minutes, while holding the Cardinals to just 99 to build a 45-7 lead by the intermission.
The Miners (5-2, 2-1 GLVC) scored on nine of their first 10 possessions of the game – the only one S&T failed to score came as the result of a missed field goal – beginning with a drive that culminated with a 30-yard field goal by Ben Styron (Harrisonville, MO/Harrisonville).
Following a three-and-out by the Cardinals (1-5, 1-3 GLVC), the Miners took over in Jewell territory and scored their first touchdown of the afternoon two plays later, as Tyler Swart (Dickinson, TX/Dickinson) hit Payton McAlister (Decatur, TX/Decatur) in the middle of the field and the redshirt freshman took it to the end zone to complete a 41-yard pass play to give S&T a 10-0 advantage.
The Cardinals were again held to three-and-out after getting the ball back and the Miners scored another quick touchdown, as following a 53-yard connection from Swart to Braxton Graham (Seneca, MO/Seneca) to put S&T inside the Jewell 10-yard line, Deshawn Jones (Olympia Fields, IL/Rich Central) scored the first of his three touchdowns on a five-yard run.
S&T busted the game open in the second quarter, getting a 14-yard scoring run by Jones, a 20-yard touchdown reception by Graham and a one-yard touchdown run by D'Luis West (Troup, TX/Troup)before the Cardinals got their first points on Will Schneider's 20-yard touchdown pass to Damari Wilson.
However, the Miners got another score in the final moments of the half, as a completion from Swart to Justin Vaught to the Cardinal 20 set up a scoring pass on the next play to Logan Armontrout(Centralia, MO/Centralia) that completed the first half scoring.
The Miners added two more second half touchdowns, one on a 51-yard run by Jones on the third play of the second half and a one-yard touchdown run by reserve quarterback Brennan Simms (Punta Gorda, FL/Charlotte) on the Miners' next possession.
Swart completed 16-of-21 passes for 353 yards and three touchdowns – all in the first half as he recorded the third-most passing yards ever by a Miner quarterback in one half – as a trio of Miner quarterbacks completed passes to 10 different receivers. Armontrout had a game-high five receptions for 81 yards.
Meanwhile, Jones finished with 120 yards rushing on 14 carries as he cleared the 100-yard mark for the first time since the season opener and 12th time in his S&T career, the second-most ever by any Miner player.
S&T's defense recorded three sacks in the game and was led by Jack Hayes (Republic, MO/Republic)with seven tackles, while Ryan Kirkendall (Silsbee, TX/Silsbee) and Landon Compton (Lamar, MO/Lamar) had six apiece.
Missouri S&T will head to the road next week, as it faces Quincy in a 5 p.m. contest in Quincy, Ill.
