The St. James volleyball team (1-1) opened their season with a pair of road games against Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 27-28. After taking a tough loss to Steelville on Monday, the Lady Tigers swept Salem in two sets to get their first win of the season on Tuesday.

After the JV beat Steelville in three sets, the varsity struggled to get into a rhythm. The Lady Tigers lost 11-25 in the first set, but had a much better showing in the second. St. James fought to keep the match alive for a third set, but fell short in a 19-25 loss.

Raina Forstrom and Makiah Marshall led the team offensively with four kills a piece. Hannah Marcee and Makayla Case each added three kills, while Mackenna Rodgers and Camille Bullock each added a kill of their own. The Lady Tigers were inconsistent serving with eight service errors and five aces. Forstrom led the team with two aces in the loss. Rodgers had a great night setting with 11 assists.

St. James didn't let the loss on Monday effect their play on Tuesday. The JV lost in three hard fought sets, before the varsity played two excellent sets. The Lady Tigers won both sets by a score of 25-16.

Forstrom was an absolute force in the hitting game for St. James, smacking eight kills to lead the team. Marcee added four kills of her own, while Rodgers and Case each added three kills. The Lady Tigers were more consistent in the serving department, committing just five errors to go along with seven aces. Marcee and Rodgers each had three aces, while Case added one. Rodgers continued to play well in the setting game with 11 assists in the win.

"Varsity looked much better as a team in our second game of the season. Our serve receive was much better which in turn allowed the girls to get their offense going," said head coach Julie Guese. "The entire team worked hard all night. A couple standouts were senior Raina Forstrom and sophomore setter Mackenna Rodgers. Rodgers worked her tail off and Forstrom was on fire."

The Lady Tigers will host Rolla for their home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
