A Rolla man faces an arrest warrant after allegedly stealing a sheriff department vehicle and fleeing the scene of a crime. Matthew A. Hinds, age 37 of Rolla, is charged with escaping from custody, stealing a motor vehicle and driving while suspended.

Hinds allegedly escaped from custody after being placed under arrest for two warrants. Hinds was placed into the patrol vehicle, meant to transport him to Phelps County Jail, and allegedly “slipped the cuffs from behind his back,” according to the case’s probable cause statement. He then allegedly moved into the driver’s seat of the vehicle, a 2012 Chevrolet truck owned by the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department, and sped away. According to the probable cause statement, Hinds was able to elude pursuing officers.

The probable cause statement said Hinds later drove off the interstate and abandoned the vehicle on County Road 200, near Kingdom Kia. A check of Hinds criminal record revealed several stealing charges, according to the probable cause statement.

Hinds has yet to be arrested, according to the probable cause statement received at the time of publication. His bond is set at $45,000.
