BOLIVAR, Mo. -- Due to the cold weather Saturday, Missouri S&T's contingent was limited to just its throwers and distance competitors at the Southwest Baptist Invitational, but two S&T competitors came away with wins in their events while several others recorded high finishes at the meet.
Garrett Blanchard (Centralia, IL/Centralia) got a win on the men's side in the 5,000-meter run, while Megan Schulte (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) was victorious for the Lady Miners in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to highlight the day for S&T.
Blanchard captured first by more than four seconds in the 5,000, winning in a time of 15:39.17, while Schulte earned her victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 11:23.78 as she won by a margin of more than 14 seconds. Schulte's time is the best by a Great Lakes Valley Conference competitor in the steeplechase thus far in the 2018 outdoor season.
The Lady Miners' other top 10 finishers Saturday included Brittany Moore, who finished third in the hammer throw with a mark of 119-3 and also placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 92-8 and Kristin Goerger (Belleville, IL/Belleville West HS) in the steeplechase in a time of 13:23.68 that put her fourth; Goerger was also 10th in the 800-meters with a time of 2:49.91.
Besides Blanchard's win in the 5,000, John Karsten (Jefferson City, MO/Blair Oaks HS)earned a pair of second place finishes Saturday, doing so in the discus with a throw of 155-2 and in the shot put with his mark of 48-9½, while also finishing third in the hammer throw with his mark of 175-10. The Miners also got a third place from Garrett Miller (Kearney, MO/Kearney) at 153-3 in the discus and from Garrett Friday (New Market, MD/Oakdale HS) in the shot at 47-3¾, who also placed fourth at 173-1 in the hammer throw.
The Miners also got a second place showing from Nick Anselmo (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles West) in the javelin throw with his mark of 164-3 and a fourth from Matt Weston in the shot put with a mark of 47-3¾; Weston also finished in sixth in the discus as he posted a throw of 138-3, while the next two spots were also claimed by Miners as Justin Murdock (Camdenton, MO/Camdenton) was seventh at 136-7 and Morgan Cornish(West Plains, MO/West Plains) finished eighth with his throw of 121-4.
Joe Binder recorded a fourth place performance in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:42.82 and AJ Knowles (Papillion, NE/Papillion South) ended up fifth in the 5,000-meters in a time of 16:04.95.
Murdock came in fifth in the shot at 47-1½, while Echele finished sixth in the hammer at 149-3 as the Miners took all the spots between sixth through 10th in that event.
Anselmo ended up seventh at 147-4, while Cornish had a top throw of 147-3, Miller had a throw of 142-2 to take ninth and Weston finished 10th with his throw of 131-3. S&T also got a seventh place finish from Miller in the shot put with his mark of 45-9¾, while Echele finished ninth at 40-2¼.
Duncan Clark (Kirksville, MO/Kirksville) finished sixth in the steeplechase in 10:04.24, while Adam Kraus (Tulsa, OK/Thomas Edison Preparatory) was seventh in 10:05.54. The 4x400-meter relay team of Clark, Bristol Hargis (Webb City, MO/Webb City), Kyle Mrotek (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) and Marshall Vaccaro (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) also finished seventh in 3:45.92, while the Miners also got a 10th place finish from Justin Johnson (Miller, MO/Willard) in the steeplechase in 10:44.20.
Missouri S&T will compete at Pittsburg State next Saturday before hosting the Dewey Allgood Invitational on April 21 at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
