Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T women's volleyball team will begin preparations for the 2018 season by competing in two tournaments as part of its nine-match spring exhibition schedule as announced this Wednesday (March 28) by first-year head coach Andy Halaz.
The Lady Miners open their spring campaign on April 7 hosting the Missouri S&T Spring Thaw Tournament at S&T's Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building in Rolla. Besides S&T, the two-court tournament features Missouri State-West Plains, Lindenwood-Belleville, and Mineral Area College. The Lady Miners begin action against Missouri State-West Plains at 10 a.m. (CT) followed by an 11:15 p.m. (CT) tilt versus Lindenwood-Belleville. S&T closes out its tourney at 1:45 p.m. (CT) with Mineral Area College serving as the opposition.
Missouri S&T then travels to Springfield, Ill., April 14 to take part in the five-team Illinois Springfield (UIS) Spring Tournament. The Lady Miners, who are slated to play four matches in the tournament, start action against Illinois Wesleyan at 10 a.m. (CT). S&T then squares off against host UIS at 11:20 a.m. (CT) before battling Illinois Central in a 12:40 p.m. (CT) encounter. The Lady Miners cap off the day by facing Parkland (Ill.) at 1:10 p.m. (CT).
S&T's final two matches of the spring will be played on April 21 at the Southeast Missouri State (SEMO) Tournament in Gape Girardeau, Mo. The Lady Miners go up against host SEMO in an 11:30 a.m. (CT) match before concluding both the tourney and their spring campaign versus Maryville at 1 p.m. (CT).
"I'm excited to watch our team compete against outside competition over the three weekends of play. We have been hard at work building a championship culture and I expect the growth we have had over the past two months to speed up over three dates of competition," said Halaz. "Our upperclassmen have embraced the mindset and now we get to see how it impacts our play on a rally to rally level.
"My hope and goal over our spring days of competition is to identify and correct any areas that have been overlooked or intercommunicated in spring practice up to this point so that when fall hits, we can bring our newcomers up to speed quickly as we work to achieve our goals," added Halaz.
The Lady Miners return 13 letter winners from last season's 10-21 squad, which compiled a 3-15 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) mark.
