ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team matched their season high of 14 hits as it won the first game of Saturday's doubleheader – snapping a six-game losing streak in the process – by a 6-1 count over Upper Iowa, but got held to a season-low of three in the nightcap and had to settle for a split with a 2-1 loss at the S&T Ballpark.

The Miners (4-9) never trailed in the first game, taking the lead in the third inning after Jason Volkmann(Liberty, MO/Liberty) and Justus Nelson (Plymouth, MN/Robbinsdale Armstrong) drew walks to open the inning, were moved ahead on Cameron Burk(Nacogdoches, TX/Cushing)'s sacrifice bunt and then Volkmann scored as Matt Knickerbocker(Bayfield, CO/Bayfield) reached on an error.

Upper Iowa (2-2) tied the score in the fourth on Zac Cain's RBI single, but S&T regained the lead in the bottom half of the frame.  Matt Gruse (Neenah, WI/Neenah) led off with a hit and ended up at third following a one-out single by Zach Bracken (Berthoud, CO/Berthoud).  Volkmann followed with a successful squeeze bunt to plate Gruse, then Nelson drove in Bracken with a hit past the shortstop.

S&T tacked on three more in the sixth for starter Dan Borek (Greenville, WI/Hortonville) as it strung together five straight hits in the inning, starting with a one-out double by Nelson.  That hit was followed by consecutive singles by Burk, Knickerbocker – which drove in Nelson – and Swindle, whose hit brought home the other two runners after Knickerbocker had stolen second.

Borek struck out six in seven innings of work to pick up his first victory of the season on the mound, while Blaine Dunbar (West Plains, MO/West Plains) and Stuart Martin (Ajax, ON/Ajax) each threw a scoreless inning to finish off the win.  The trio of Miner pitchers held the Peacocks to four hits in game one.

Swindle had four of the Miners' 14 hits in the opener, while four others had two hits apiece.

However, the Miner bats went silent in game two, as they didn't get their first hit until Swindle's leadoff single in the fourth.  The Miners got a second hit in the inning from Kaleb Reid (Smithville, MO/Smithville) that got a runner to third, but couldn't score with that opportunity.

Upper Iowa had taken the lead in the opening inning when A.J. Friedrich drove in a pair with a two-out, two-run single off S&T starter Trent Green (Perryville, MO/Perryville) and those runs held up as Peacock starter Kolton Gonnerman kept S&T scoreless until the seventh.

The Miners broke the shutout in the seventh when Reid was hit by a pitch and later scored on a hit by pinch-hitter Connor Forsythe, but Gonnerman got a strikeout to end the game.

Green scattered five hits and struck out three in his start, while Luke Marcheschi (Bloomington, IL/Central Catholic) had four strikeouts among the seven outs he recorded in relief.

The second doubleheader between the teams that was scheduled for Sunday has been moved to Monday at noon due to the wet and cold weather forecast for the area on Sunday.
