After two top eight finishes on the first day, Missouri S&T gained three additional NCAA Division II provisional qualifiers Saturday on the second day of the Lion Open at Missouri Southern and also had a first place finish to highlight its performances on the day.

The Miners' top finish on Friday came from its distance medley relay squad, as the team of Wil Crutcher (Rolla, MO/Rolla), Justin Hawkins (O'Fallon, IL/Montrose), Alex Staples (River Forest, IL/Oak Park River Forest) and AJ Knowles (Papillion, NE/Papillion South) posted a time of 10:57.13 to finish in fifth place overall.

The Lady Miners' top performances Friday came from Anne Simpson, who recorded an 11th-placee finish in the pentathlon with a total of 2,350 points and Anne Massey, who took 12th in the 60-meter hurdles with her time of 9.78 seconds. 

Skyler Ruszkowski (League City, TX/Clear Falls) finished second in the high jump to get her provisional mark, as she cleared 5-5¾ and had only one miss in the competition until bowing out at the winning height of 5-7.  Meanwhile, Amanda Wetzel (Keller, TX/Keller) matched her best mark of the indoor season in the pole vault by clearing 12-5½ to take third in that competition.

The Lady Miners also had four of the top eight finishers in the 3,000-meters, led by Hannah Shearer (Conroe, TX/The Woodlands Christian Academy) in third place in 10:58.45.  Megan Schulte (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) was right behind her in 11:03.53, while Katelyn Fricke (Brimfield, IL/Brimfield) placed sixth in 11:05.96 and Kennedy Duffy (Rochester, IL/Rochester) was eighth in 11:09.73.  S&T also got a ninth place finish from Aly VanCardo (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) in the mile with a time of 5:37.17.

S&T's 4x400-meter relay team of Madison Calvin, Kim Huskey (Hillsboro, MO/Grandview HS), Anne Simpson (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) and VanCardo finished eighth in 4:21.95.

On the men's side of the meet, the Miners gained two new provisional marks, one coming when Ezekiel Buck (Elburn, IL/Geneva) finished third in the heptathlon with a school record total of 4,950 points and the other coming via Lucas Rosenbaum (Sidney, NE/Sidney HS)'s fifth place showing in the pole vault with his clearance of 15-9.  The winning performance on Saturday also came on the men's side, which came from Duncan Clark (Kirksville, MO/Kirksville) in the mile as he won the event with a time of 4:23.72.

S&T also had a third place performance from Bailey Crone (Collinsville, IL/Collinsville) in the high jump with his clearance of 6-5½ to take third, while Garrett Blanchard(Centralia, IL/Centralia) placed eighth in the mile in 4:36.26 as did Alex Staples (River Forest, IL/Oak Park River Forest) in the 400-meters in 51.69 seconds.  Andrew Scherff(St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell North HS) was ninth in the pole vault at 14-9 along with Brandon Religa (Manhattan, KS/Manhattan) in the 600-yard run in 1:17.57.

John Karsten (Jefferson City, MO/Blair Oaks HS) recorded a ninth place finish in the shot put with a mark of 47-6½, while teammate Garrett Miller (Kearney, MO/Kearney)finished right behind him at 46-3¼.

Crone also finished 10th in the triple jump with a leap of 44-3½, while the 4x400-meter relay team of Justin Hawkins (O'Fallon, IL/Montrose), Religa, Wil Crutcher (Rolla, MO/Rolla) and Staples finished in ninth place in 3:32.12.

Missouri S&T will compete next weekend at the Gorilla Classic at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kan.
