The Rolla JV boys basketball team took part in the Lebanon Tournament last week. The Bulldogs opened the tournament with a win over Republic, before falling to Nixa in the semi-final. Rolla faced Hillcrest in the third place match, falling 60-49 on Saturday, Jan. 13. They also played regular season games alongside the varsity throughout the week.
The JV Bulldogs kicked off the tournament with a tough win over Republic. Rolla was in an early hole in the contest, falling behind 11-5 in the first quarter. The script was flipped in the second, as Rolla started to bury threes. Rolla hit four in the quarter, two of which came from RJ Alfred, while Zach Light and Colby Shivers each hit one. Rolla played strong defense in the second to carry a slim 23-22 lead into the half. Both teams scored six in the second to let Rolla hold onto that one point lead heading into the fourth. That's when Jack Hounsom took over. He scored 13 points in the fourth quarter alone to help lead Rolla to a 42-39 win.
Rolla then stepped away from the tournament for a night to play against Hillcrest on Tuesday, Jan. 9. Rolla got behind in the second quarter, trailing 25-20 at the half on their way to a 59-54 loss. Alfred scored 13 points in the loss, while Parker Yoakum and Trey Brown each scored 10.
The Bulldogs had a tough matchup against Nixa in the semi-final of the Lebanon JV Tournament, falling 88-55. Nixa jumped out to a 25-11 lead after the opening quarter and never relinquished that lead. Dawitt Pritchett led Rolla with 12 points in the loss, while Alfred scored 11 and Shivers added eight.
The Rolla JV then stepped away from the tournament again on Friday, Jan. 12 to join the varsity against Helias. Rolla struggled to get their offense going against the Crusaders and went into the half trailing 21-17. Scoring was at a premium on Friday and Helias maintained their lead throughout the second half to beat Rolla 44-34. Alfred led Rolla with 10 points in the loss.
After falling to Helias, the JV had to turn around and face Hillcrest for the second time in the span of a week in the third place game of the Lebanon Tournament. Hillcrest got out to a five point lead after the opening quarter, before sinking the JV Bulldogs with a 23-point second quarter. Rolla couldn't keep up and went into halftime trailing 36-20. Hillcrest added to their lead throughout the second half to sink the Bulldogs 60-49. The loss gave Rolla a fourth place finish in the tournament. Mohamed Elshiekh scored 13 points for Rolla in the loss, while light added nine points on three fourth-quarter threes.
