On Dec. 17, 2017, at approximately 2:15 p.m., officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 800 block of Cambridge Drive in Rolla. A simple drug deal gone bad, led to an arrest and eventually, a second arrest.

Phelps County Sheriff's Department (PCSD) is reporting that the recent car shootout, reported earlier this week, is likely the "result of a drug deal gone bad."

On Dec. 17, 2017, at approximately 2:15 p.m., officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 800 block of Cambridge Drive in Rolla, PCSD reported in a press release. PCSD says that they received reports that two vehicles, including several people were involved and that someone may have been shot.

When officers arrived on the scene, according to PCSD, all parties were gone; however, evidence was collected that corroborated that at least one gunshot had been fired at this location. At approximately 3:05 p.m. this same afternoon, officers responded to a second report of shots fired at a residence near the intersection of 1st and Oak Streets in Rolla, the press release noted.

In this incident, information was allegedly received, according to PCSD, which indicated that the vehicles and people involved in the incident on Cambridge Drive were also involved in this second shooting incident. PCSD reporte that, when officers arrived at this location, they again found that the vehicles and parties involved had left the scene.

While investigating this incident, PCSD said in their press release on the subject, officers were dispatched to the area of the eastbound lane of Interstate 44 at the 189-mile marker on-ramp for a report of two vehicles chasing each other with shots being fired from a vehicle.

The vehicles involved in this incident, allegedly matched the description of the vehicles involved in the first two incidents, PCSD reported. With the assistance of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and St. James Police Department, one of the vehicles was located and stopped.

As a result of the traffic stop, Daultyn J. Comparato, age 19 of Rolla was arrested, which was reported earlier this week. Comparato was found to be in the possession of a stolen firearm, according to a probable cause statement in the arrest. He was subsequently charged with Discharging/Shooting a Firearm at or from a Motor Vehicle and theft of a firearm. Comparato was incarcerated in the Phelps County Jail in lieu of a $100,000.00 bond.

A follow-up investigation was conducted by the Rolla Police Department’s Division of Criminal Investigations Unit. Comparato and some of his associates allegedly initially tried to mislead investigators by providing a fictitious name of the other shooter, according to the press release from PCSD. As the investigation unfolded, investigators obtained additional evidence and information, which allegedly indicated that all three shooting incidents were the result of a drug deal gone bad, PCSD reported. Investigators were able to identify the alleged second shooter, as Shawn M. Leach, age 20 of Rolla, MO.

On Dec. 21, 2017, Shawn M. Leach was located and arrested on multiple outstanding warrants unrelated to this shooting. He was incarcerated in the Phelps County Jail without bond. Formal charges against Leach in connection with these shooting incidents are pending, PCSD said in their press release.

Other agencies assisting in this investigation were the Missouri State Highway Patrol, St. James Police Department, Phelps County Sheriff’s Department and the MS&T Police Department.

The charges for which Daultyn J. Comparato and Shawn M. Leach have been charged are mere accusations. Evidence in support of these charges must be presented to a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.
