St. James girls stay at No. 1; Rolla boys move up to No. 4.

The Rolla High School boys’ basketball team is currently ranked as high as any Bulldog team has been ranked - possibly - in 60-some years.

This week Rolla moved up to No. 4 in the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association (MBCA) Class 4 state poll. The poll was released Wednesday evening.

Last week Rolla cracked the poll at No. 6.

The current Bulldogs have started this season 7-0.

RHS head coach Mark Miller is a Rolla native and played on one of the best Bulldog teams ever during his senior season - the 1979-80 campaign.

Miller said this year’s Bulldog squad is ranked higher than any RHS squad he can remember - including the 79-80 squad he played on.

According to Miller, the highest that 79-80 team was ranked was No. 9 in Class 4 (back then there were just four classifications).

There were some strong Rolla teams in the 1950s, but records of those Bulldog state rankings weren’t available.

Miller says the 79-80 Bulldogs got off to a 9-0 start before losing in the Jefferson City Capital City Tournament.

If the Bulldogs make it to the championship game of next week’s US Bank/Rolla High Holiday Invitational, they will be trying to surpass that 9-0 start.

Where does Miller stand on the team he coaches possibly passing the team he played for?

“That would be great!” he said. “And it would be great if some of those players (from 79-80) were there to watch.”

The Waynesville Tiger boys, also in the US Bank field, dropped from No. 6 to No. 8 in the Class 5 state poll, after losing to No. 5-ranked Hazelwood Central last week in the Waynesville Route 66 Shootout.

The Iberia Rangers of the Frisco League - last week’s No. 1-ranked team in Class 2 - fell to No. 6 this week after losing to the state’s second-ranked Class 1 team, South Iron, 65-62 on the road on Dec. 19.

Pacific, of the Four Rivers Conference, is the No. 10-ranked team in the boys’ Class 4 poll.

Springfield Kickapoo - a Ozark Conference rival of Rolla and Waynesville - sits atop the Class 5 boys’ poll.

In the girls’ poll St. James continues to be ranked No. 1 in the Class 3 poll while future district tournament rival Fatima is ranked No. 2.

Plato, of the Frisco League, is ranked No. 6 in the girls’ Class 2 poll.

Three Ozark Conference girls’ teams continue to be state-ranked - West Plains is No. 3 and Springfield Hillcrest No. 9 in Class 4 and Kickapoo No. 2 in Class 5.

Poll                                                                                                               The MBCA Basketball poll is selected by a panel of coaches representing each of the 8 MBCA districts and each of the five Missouri basketball classes.
