Authorities say a fatal shooting in rural southwest Missouri appears to have been a case of self-defense.

Douglas County Sheriff Chris Degase tells KYTV residents of the Gentryville community don't need to worry about a random shooter being at large.

The sheriff said 59-year-old Steven Compton, of Ava, was found dead at a home in the unincorporated Gentryville area Friday night.

Degase said evidence gathered so far indicates that the person who fired a single shot at Compton acted in self-defense. The sheriff did not identify the shooter or give other details of what led to the shooting.

Degase also said he might request a coroner's inquest to determine if the shooting was justified.

Gentryville is located about 22 miles south of Ava.
