A Guide for Newbies: How to Play Roulette

Since gracing the halls of the French elite in the Napoleonic era, Roulette has become one of the most played and elegant casino games. One misconception is that Roulette is hard to play. While roulette offers several ways to bet, it’s simple: Bet on which color or number the white ball will land on. Keep reading why you should give Roulette a shot because you’re only a spin away from winning it all.

General Rules

Roulette comes in three main forms: American, European, and French. French is the oldest version, but the European variant plays exactly like it and also shares the single zero. The only difference between the French and European variants is that French Roulette has all the betting terms and words written in French on the table, while the European variant is normally in English.

For American casinos, American Roulette is the standard game. However, American Roulette has a double zero. The extra zero swings the house advantage to 5.26%.

How to Play Roulette

First, make your deposit to be able to make bets or buy some chips from the croupier at the casino table or from the cash cage. When you’re ready or at the table, consider these next steps:

1. Navigate to Your Game

If you’re playing at an online casino, you might have more variants like Platinum, Auto, and Lightning Roulette with the live dealer. But you are free to play the standalone versions of American and European Roulette.

If you’re going to a retail casino like in Atlantic City or Vegas, you must wait until a seat becomes available. Also, unlike the live dealer, which offers flexible bets to accommodate those with smaller budgets to high rollers, some land-based casinos have exclusive high roller tables.

2. Make Your Bet

The real fun with Roulette comes with the different bets you can make. If you’re counting the dollars, sticking with even money bets like wagering on the white ball landing on a specific number or color might be best. In these cases, the payout ratio is 35:1.

If you’re feeling ambitious, Roulette supports the split bet, where you gamble on two side-by-side numbers. To signify this bet, you place the chip between those numbers and wait to see if you get a 17:1 payout. If you believe in the power of three, Roulette supports this claim with the street bet.

In this case, you are betting on the white ball hitting each of the three numbers in succession. When this happens, prepare to celebrate with an 11:1 payout.

The corner bet is a staple Roulette bet. In this scenario, you place your chip where four numbers touch. If this difficult wager pans out, the payout is 8:1. Here are some of the other common Roulette bets to consider:

  1. Even and Odd wagers
  2. Column Bets
  3. Dozen Bets
  4. Red or Black Bet
  5. Low and High Bet

The red/black and low and high wagers are even money bets, perfect for those who like to make small wagers. It’s not common to find side bets when playing Roulette.

3. Consider Using a Strategy

Even though Roulette is the ultimate game of chance, it is still rich with battle-tested strategies. Before we discuss some of the most prominent Roulette strategies, it’s essential that you don’t become dependent on them. Total dependence on strategies can cause you to go through your bankroll faster than you played, and it can lead to gambler’s fallacies and problem gambling disorders.

The Martingale strategy calls for players to double their following bet should they lose. If successful, you will at least get back to your budget point before the loss. If you should win, go back to the previous winning bet amount.

The Reverse Martingale, usually called the Paroli method, is the polar opposite. It calls for you to double your wagers should you win. While this opens the door for more substantial wins and payouts, even if you stick to even-money wagers, it is another way of losing it all if you stick with it too long. Again, use strategies like D’Alembert sparingly.

4. Earn Your Winnings

Now that you have the Roulette basics under your belt, it’s time to put them into action. Depending on the online casino, you might be able to play practice versions of the standalone games. Unfortunately, you can’t play practice games with the live dealer.

Finally, only play at a reputable online casino to ensure you have your personal and financial information protected. And above all, a guarantee that you will receive your well-deserved Roulette winnings.

What Are Your Chances of Winning?

Even though American Roulette is available at most American casinos, including online, there’s no question that the 5.26% house advantage might be a turn-off. Another option might be to let the wheel spin with European Roulette at 2.70% because of the 36 number pockets.

To add to your budget, most online casinos have promotions for new members that apply to most Roulette games. Above all, play and practice responsible gaming.

Due to the diverse regulatory landscape spanning countries and regions, it’s crucial to adhere to local laws and regulations when engaging in gaming activities.
