Currently the national average is $3.81, and some cities – Chicago and Los Angeles – long ago topped $4 a gallon. The record high for gas prices was July 2008, when the national average was $4.11.

Severe weather in the South and Midwest killed at least nine people, and tornadoes touched down in Mississippi and Alabama on Friday. Homes and an oil refinery were damaged by the tornadoes.
