A pair of touchdowns in the final 5:13 of play allowed the Rolla High School football team to roar from behind and defeat the Washington Blue Jays 28-21 in Missouri Class 5 Regional playoff action Wednesday night.
Rolla, now 10-1, will travel to St. Louis Monday to take on Parkway North in Class 5 Sectional play (7 p.m. kickoff).
Parkway North, 8-1, received a first-round playoff bye.
Washington ends with a 7-4 record.
On a 4th-and-11 the Blue Jays took their first lead of the game when QB Justin Hinni hit an open Denis Moore in the endzone for a 30-yard TD pass. The PAT made it 21-14 with 7:22 left.
Rolla responded by getting a 35-yard kickoff return by Gavin Otte and then scored on a 5-play, 53-yard drive with Jonny Canhos getting a 27-yard TD run to tie the game. Rolla then booted a squib kick on the kickoff. Washington fumbled and Rolla’s Daniel Donius recovered at the Blue Jay 32.
Six plays later Canhos scored the game-winner on a 6-yard TD run.
Rolla’s Jamie Phelps intercepted a Hinni pass in the final 30 seconds to seal the win. Rolla had 326 yards of total offense, with Canhos rushing for 177 yards and quarterback Jake Morris running for 119 yards and passing for 69 yards. Otte caught 5 passes for 57 yards.
