RHS fall sports begin practice Monday, Aug. 10

All fall sports at Rolla High School are slated to kick off the fall season with practice sessions on Monday.

Practice begins for high school fall sports around the state on Monday, with games and meets beginning around two weeks later.

Here is a look at the Rolla Public School fall sports:

High School

Football: First-year head coach Josh Smith will hold two-a-day practices from 6-8 a.m. and 4-7 p.m. Aug. 10-12 at the high school practice field. On Thursday practice is 6-8 a.m. and 3-6:30 p.m. and on Friday, Aug. 14 the team’s Gatorade/soda scrimmage will be at 7 p.m., with a parents meeting to follow. Rolla has four offensive starters and four defensive starters back from last year’s 7-3 squad.

Boys’ Soccer: Head coach Mike Howard is expecting around 50 players for practice. The practice times Monday through Wednesday will be 4-6 p.m. at the Rolla Middle School field. Thursday’s practice will be 3:45-5:30 p.m. The team’s first scrimmage is slated for 11 a.m. Aug. 22 on the Kiwanis Field at the Bray Sports Complex. The Bulldogs are coming off a 14-12, district tournament championship season. Seven starters are back from that squad.

Girls’ Golf: Coach Zach Nixon welcomes between eight to 14 players to practice. Tryouts will be Monday through Thursday, starting at 4 p.m. at Oak Meadow Country Club. The Lady Bulldogs return their top four players from last season’s district championship squad.

Volleyball: Lady Bulldog head coach Amy Luna expects around 40 players from grades 9-12 in practice starting Monday. Practice will be 4-6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and after school on Thursday and Friday at the RHS gym. RHS has three varsity players returning from last season’s 16-17 squad.

Softball: Lady Bulldog head coach Tim Dunn expects 25-to-30 players for tryouts beginning Monday at Schuman Park. Tryouts will be from 3:45-6:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday at Schuman. Practice will be from 3:45-6:30 p.m. Thursday and from 4:30-6:15 p.m. on Friday. There will be a morning scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 15, starting at 9 a.m. at Schuman Park. The Lady Bulldogs have four starters back from last season’s 18-9 squad.

Girls’ Tennis: Coach Joe Schisler said around 18 players are expected in practice Monday at the newly-resurfaced Ber Juan Park tennis courts. Lady Bulldog practice will be from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 4:40-6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14. RHS finished 9-4 in dual meets last season but must replace five of its top six players.

Cross Country: Coach Don Knapp will meet with runners from the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams at the RHS Commons Foyer, lower level on Monday. Practice time for varsity runners will be 6:30-8:30 a.m. and 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 10-12. Practice for all levels of runners on Aug. 10-12 will be 6-7:30 p.m. Practice times on Aug. 13 will be 3:30-5:30 p.m. and practice for the varsity runners on Saturday, Aug. 15 will be from 8-10 a.m.

Cheerleading: The fall high school cheerleaders will be coached by Karen Richards and are to meet from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday at the high school and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Aug. 11-12.

Junior High School

Freshman Football: Derek Chance is the head coach of the Rolla freshman football team this season. The Bullpups will practice  from 3:30-6 p.m. Aug. 10-13 at the Rolla Junior High practice field.

Eighth-Grade Football: Kellen Laws is the eighth-grade football coach this season. Eighth-grade football practice begins Aug. 17, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the Rolla Junior High practice field.

Eighth-Grade Volleyball: Sonya Busch will coach the eighth-grade volleyball squad. Practice on Aug. 17-21 will be held from 3:15-5:15 p.m. at the Rolla Junior High School gym.

Cheerleaders: The junior high cheerleading coach is Teresa Stratman and the junior high squad will begin practice 3:15-5:30 p.m. on Aug. 17.
