SPRINGFIELD -- The slow-down style of the Springfield Parkview boys’ basketball team often times makes for a game not particularly pleasing to watch.
But that was fine with the Rolla Bulldogs, who did not mind winning ugly Tuesday.
The Bulldogs sank their free throws down the stretch and went on to post a 50-47 Ozark Conference victory over the Parkview Vikings.
With the win Rolla inched closer to the .500 level for the season. The Bulldogs are now 10-11 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
The game was close throughout, with the two teams swapping leads much of the way.
Parkview took a 12-11 advantage after the first period only to see the Bulldogs tie the game 20-20 by halftime.
It wasn’t exactly run-and-gun in the third period, as only a total of six points were scored in the quarter. Rolla went into the fourth quarter up 24-22.
And in the final period Rolla pulled out the win at the free throw line, hitting 16-of-21 attempts from the charity stripe in the quarter. The Bulldogs had as much as a nine-point lead in the final period.
“The thing we wanted to do was push the ball, but push it under control,” said RHS head coach Mark Miller. “We did a good job of it in the first half, but kind of got away from it in the second half.
“Parkview runs a very methodical offense and that can sometimes frustrate a team. But we were patient and got the win.”
Senior guard Andrew Chism connected on 10-of-13 free throw attempts and finished with a game-high 17 points for the Bulldogs while junior forward Brendon Dowdy added 11 points.
Guard Alex Poke had 13 points and forward Jordan Hitchcock added 11 for the Vikings.
Rolla’s junior varsity team improved its record to 16-4 by blasting Parkview 63-30.
The jayvee game was close for a half, as Rolla led 14-11 after one period and 26-20 at halftime. However, RHS outscored Parkview 14-8 in the third period and 23-2 in the final quarter.
Junior guard Trevor Dinsdale pumped in 19 points -- including five 3-pointers -- to pace the Rolla jayvee squad while junior Gavin Otte added 14 points, sophomore Drew Hagni 11 points and sophomore Chris Stow eight rebounds.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to play again Friday, hosting Camdenton in another league game at the RHS gym. The jayvee contest is to begin at 6 p.m. with the varsity game to follow.
