Apparently a week off can do a team good.
Certainly the Rolla High School boys’ soccer team will not argue that point.
After not playing a game last week the Bulldogs hosted one of the favorites for the upcoming district tournament in Ozark Conference rival Camdenton.
The Camdenton Lakers have been one of the top teams in the area this fall, having just lost to state-ranked Springfield Kickapoo 2-1 and, last week, shutting out Jefferson City 2-0. The same Jefferson City squad that defeated Rolla earlier in the season.
However, senior forward Tyler Sinnott and the Bulldogs went through the Lakers like a hot knife through butter Tuesday at the Kiwanis Field.
Sinnott set the Bulldogs’ single-game goals-scored record with seven to power Rolla to a shockingly easy 9-0 league victory over the Lakers.
Rolla improves to 11-8-1 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
The district seeding meeting will be today, and last night’s result could go a long way in allowing the Bulldogs to gain the No. 1 seed.
Sinnott broke the old single-game goal record of five, which had been held by Wes Trueblood.
RHS had a 5-0 halftime lead and had finished its scoring for the night with 26 minutes remaining in the game.
Senior Andrew Chism had the other two goals for the Bulldogs. Justin Schubring had two assists while Stephen Moorkamp, Jason Howard, Matt Beasley, Andrew Chism and Kory Carter all had one assists.
Moorkamp got the shutout in goal.
“The week without games did two things for us,” said RHS head coach Mike Howard. “No. 1 we were able to finally get healthy. No. 2 we were able to have some great training sessions. The last three practices have been the best that we have had all year. We knew what we were doing wrong but hadn’t had much time to practice with our busy game schedule.
“We have to continue to work hard at improving every day and at the end of the season hopefully we will have done something that we can be proud of.”
Camdenton won the junior varsity game 3-0. The Rolla jayvee squad falls to 10-3-1.
Next up for Rolla will be conference rival Kickapoo, the No. 5-ranked team in the latest Missouri Class 2 state poll. The jayvee game is to begin at 5 p.m. Thursday at Kiwanis Field with the varsity contest to follow. It will be Senior Night for the Bulldogs.
