The Newburg High School softball team improved its record to 2-0 by clipping Belle 9-7 on Thursday.
The Lady Wolves tallied three runs in the top of the third inning, two in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the seventh. Belle countered with a run in the first, two in the third and fourth in the bottom of the seventh before falling short.
Freshman Shelby Friend was 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored for Newburg while senior Alex Hoffman was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored; Clarissa Rosenburg was 2-for-4, and Shannon McNamara, Rachel Rigsby and Renate Richardson each had a hit.
Friend was the winning pitcher, working all seven innings and allowing six hits, six walks and fanning seven.
It was a sloppy game in the field on both sides, as of the combined 16 runs scored in the contest, only five were earned.
The Lady Wolves are slated to compete in the Frisco League Softball Tournament Monday through Friday, Sept. 3 in Plato.
