It’s a sure-fire bet that the military personnel at Fort Leonard Wood are more accurate with their bombs than the Missouri S&T and William Woods men’s basketball squads were with theirs Tuesday night.
The hobbled-up S&T Miners, ice-cold from the field most of the way, warmed up at the right time to force overtime during Tuesday’s exhibition game with the William Woods Owls at the Davidson Fitness Center on post. The Miners then outscored the Owls 13-6 in the overtime period to post a 82-75 victory.
With just 10 practices under its belt -- and playing several players either nursing injuries or coming off illness -- S&T struggled in its opening action under first-year head coach Jim Glash.
“We looked like a team with 10 practices,” Glash said. “We spent so much time learning what to do offensively for this (exhibition )we really haven’t shot the ball much in practice.”
And it showed.
The Miners shot just 27 percent from the field, hitting just 20 of 73 shots.
The Miners, 9-17 last season, will open the 2009-10 schedule on Nov. 16, hosting Harding University (7 p.m. at the Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building). The Owls, an NAIA program who finished 8-21 last season, is slated to open next Monday at Avila.
