All school, state and national single-game scoring records were safe at the Rolla High School gym Tuesday night.
In a Ozark Conference battle, both the Rolla and Lebanon high school boys’ basketball teams struggled putting the ball in the basket on Tuesday.
However, the host Bulldogs turned up the defensive intensity to help make mini-runs in the second and third periods hold up, posting a 46-34 victory over the Lebanon Yellow Jackets.
Rolla improves to 15-5 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Lebanon falls to 8-12.
It was simply one of those nights for the Bulldogs, normally a strong-shooting squad.
“Early on we were getting good looks but missed some shots,” said RHS head coach Mark Miller. “It’s funny, you miss shots early and the shooters go cold. But these guys didn’t get their heads down and we really played some defense.”
After the two squads evenly divided 18 points over the first quarter, Rolla nearly threw a shutout over the second period. Indeed, the Jackets were held without a field goal in the second quarter and managed just one point in the period.
And while the Bulldogs didn’t exactly light it up, they were able to get some breathing room due to Lebanon’s scoring drought. A pair of free throws by senior guard Jay Zalis with 1:39 remaining in the second quarter gave the Bulldogs their largest lead of the half, 19-10. That proved to be the score at halftime.
RHS went on a 8-0 run to start the second half, and a three-pint field goal off the left baseline by senior guard Mike Miller upped the RHS advantage to 17, 27-10.
Midway through the third period senior forward Keegan Garner netted a 15-foot jumper to give the Bulldogs what proved to be their largest lead of the game, 31-12.
Rolla took a 31-16 edge into the fourth period.
The Jackets finally got on track with an 18-point fourth quarter, which surpassed their entire production over the first three quarters combined.
However, Rolla maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
During the first quarter Zalis scored the 1,000th point of his RHS career. He finished with a game-high 18 points while Miller added 13.
Jordan McGinnis, a 6-3 senior, paced Lebanon with 12 points.
“Our guys have matured and figured out how to play ball control,” Mark Miller said. “They try to put it in the mode to take good shots.
“But the rhythm of the game was just a real challenge for us the entire way.”

Four jayvee Bulldogs scored in double figures, powered by freshman forward Caleb Copeland, who tallied 18 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked five shots. Also for Rolla sophomore Tyler Kean had 17 points, freshman Shane O’Brennan 13 points and freshman Landon Maynard had 10 points and dished out 10 assists.
