Lady Wolves roar back in fourth quarter

A big fourth quarter allowed the Newburg High School girls’ basketball team to come from behind and post a 71-58 Frisco League victory over Richland on Tuesday.

Newburg improves to 4-12 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

The game was tied at 15 after one period and the Richland Lady Bears took a 32-31 edge into halftime. Newburg trailed 49-45 after three periods but then outscored Richland 26-9 in the fourth quarter.

Senior guard Hannah Yelton poured in 34 points to pace the Newburg Lady Wolves while freshman forward Kelsey Austin had 14 points and 10 rebounds; freshman forward Whitney Sands grabbed 14 rebounds, and sophomore guard Shelby Friend had 11 points.

Senior Emily Case netted 23 points and senior Jessica Hutton added 21 for Richland.

Newburg won the junior varsity game 37-32. Kaitlyn Jordan had 14 points for the Newburg jayvee squad.

The Lady Wolves will host Steelville in non-conference action Thursday, starting at 6 p.m. On Saturday Newburg hosts a non-league boys/girls triple-header against Bourbon, with the boys’ jayvee game starting at 3 p.m. followed by the girls’ varsity game and the boys’ varsity contest.
