The Rolla High School girls soccer team had no problem dispatching Hillcrest in the opening round of the Class 2 District 11 Tournament Monday.
The Lady Bulldogs, seeded third, beat the sixth-seeded Hornets 10-0 to improve to 17-8 for the year. They will now meet second-seeded Glendale today at 7 p.m. in the semifinals.
“Glendale is a very physical team and they play with a lot of pace,” RHS head coach Mike Howard said. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to keep possession of the ball for a while. It will be very important that we finish our chances.”
Glendale beat Rolla 1-0 in Rolla on a goal by Lorin Opfer with just over seven minutes to play earlier in the year. However, the Lady Bulldogs lost to the Falcons in the regular season last year only to upset them in the semifinals of the district tournament. Rolla went on to win the district championship. Can RHS repeat that story this year?
“We are playing as well as we have been all season, but I’m sure Glendale is too,” Howard said. “It should come down to who gets the breaks. Hopefully, the weather will be good and we will see what happens.”
On Monday against Hillcrest, sophomore Olivia Cox and junior Ashley Kerr both had hat tricks for Rolla. Angelica Mata, Ellen Spooner, Kaitlin Bramel, and Katelyn Maddy each added one goal.
Kim Carter, Emily Spooner, and Ellen Spooner each recorded two assists. Jaclyn Standfast and Kerr both had one.
Sophomore Adrian Pogue posted her 13th shutout of the season.
