More than $1,500 was raised for the Victory Junction Gang Camp on Saturday during the first annual NASCAR Day Softball Tournament, held at Nelson Hart Park and sponsored by the local Wal-Mart Distribution Center.

The Victory Junction Gang Camp is a camp for children with disabilities or chronic medical problems. The camp is owned and operated by NASCAR’s Petty family and backed by several organizations, such as Wal-Mart.

Last year 168 Wal-Mart locations raised more than $88,000 through the NASCAR Day Campaign. Proceeds from last week’s local tournament will go to this year’s campaign.

There were 10 teams in the slow-pitch, double-elimination softball tournament on Saturday. The Chadburries, a team from Nixa, defeated Sucker Punch Sally’s of St. Louis in the championship game.

The Degenerates of St. James placed third in the tourney while Fidelity of Rolla was fourth, the Head Hunters of Salem was fifth and the Long W’s, a team from the Wal-Mart Distribution Center, was sixth.

Also playing were the Extendables from Wal-Mart, CLC of Rolla, A-2 Shipping from Wal-Mart and Wal-Mart Transportation.

Larry Moreland and Tommy Martin came up with the idea for the tourney while David McPeak, Brock Summers and Jerry Hollingshead all donated time to umpire. Mike Gan cooked the food and Lynette McPeak ran the concessions.
