Most of Tuesday’s second round of the 40th annual Ken Lanning Jr. Golf Tournament was wiped out by a thunderstorm that rolled into the area just before noon.
Golfers 11 and under finished their rounds, but that was it. The rest of the field had to settle for a one-round tournament.
For the girls, age division winners included Nicole Sullivan, Olivia Sowers, Courtney Colench, Taylor Black, Alexandra Gregory, Jordan Stevens, Megan Keck, Briana Choi, and Lindsey Johnson.
For the boys, age division winners included Nicholas Hoven, Logan Choi, Nicholas Stimble, Ryan McKinney, Nate Bailey, Cameron Elmore, Donald Stimble, David Abolt, and Chris Martin and Taylor Vanzandt (tie).
“We think the tournament went very well,” said Greg Doss, a Missouri Golf Association (MGA) Director. “We had to finagle some tee times because of all the late entries, but other than that I think everything went smoothly. I believe we had 95 kids. We can handle more than that and someday hope to have 150-175 kids, but we were very pleased. We had Phelps County Bank as a corporate sponsor, and we appreciate that. All the funds from the tournament will go to the Ken Lanning Scholarship. And, I heard we had some college coaches out here looking at the kids. I think Kenny would be pleased.
“We had a lot of parents give us compliments after the awards and said they’ll be back next year. I think the parents were happy and the kids got a lot out of it. I think we have to consider it a major success.”
It was the first time the MGA conducted the event. Improvements made included a free clinic featuring John Utley, the teaching pro at Old Hawthorne Club in Columbia, Mo. There was also a three-hole golf exhibition that drew a nice crowd and a free barbecue for the kids.
