A big third quarter was enough to power the Owensville High School girls’ basketball team to a 51-43 victory over Newburg Monday.
The game also served as the consolation final game for the Rolla Tournament. The two teams were to meet in the consolation final at the Rolla event last month but it was postponed due to weather.
Newburg led 16-14 after the first period and clung to a 29-27 halftime lead. However, Owensville outscored the Lady Wolves 14-6 in the third period to take a 41-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Dutchgirls led the rest of the way.
Sophomore guard Hannah Yelton, back after missing several games with a hip injury, had 11 points for Newburg, now 5-10.
Junior Mikayla Fries had 13 points and senior Liz Tate added 12 for Owensville.
Owensville also won the junior varsity game 36-35. Jessica Ross had nine points for the Newburg jayvee squad while Kim Buddemeyer had 14 points for the Owensville jayvee team.
Newburg is scheduled to host Steelville in non-conference action Thursday, with the jayvee game starting at 6 p.m. and the varsity contest to follow.
On Saturday Newburg plays Bourbon in a boy/girl triple-header. The jayvee boys’ game is to begin at 3 p.m. at the Newburg High School gym followed by the girls’ varsity game and later the boys’ varsity game.
