Dixon golfer Jace Long has advanced to the quarterfinals of match play in the Missouri Amateur, being held at the St. Joseph Country Club.

Long, a sophomore-to-be at the University of Missouri, won his second- and third-round matches on Friday.

In the second round Friday morning Long knocked off Dean Merrill of Kansas City 3 and 2.

And in the afternoon Long defeated Brian Scott of Hannibal 3 and 2.

That moves Long into the Amateur quarterfinals.

Hittin’ in the summer.

That’s what the St. James High School football team was doing over the weekend while taking part in the East Central Football Camp on the campus of St. Francis Borgia High School in Washington.

The event was a full-contact camp. In each session teams ran several offensive and defensive plays against another school and no team scores were kept.

“It’s a big help during the summer,” said St. James High School football head coach Greg Harlan of the full-contact event. “I think it’s one of the best values in the state, at just $30 per kid to get in a lot of football. And the value the kids learn on the field in the summer is great.”

On Friday St. James took on Washington No. 2, St. Clair and Borgia. And on Saturday the Tigers faced Lutheran/St. Charles, Orchard Farm and Pacific.

The U14 Rolla Knights boys took home the gold at the Salsa Tournament, held June 5-7 at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex in Blue Springs and hosted by Lee’s Summit Soccer Club.

The Knights dominated play, finishing with a 4-0 record and scoring 18 goals while allowing just four.

The Rolla squad defeated Lee’s Summit Vipers 5-2 and topped Futura Javuntus 4-1 in regular pool play.

In the semifinals the Knights knocked off Kansas City Fury 5-1 to advance to the title game.

In the finals the Rolla squad posted a 4-0 shutout victory over Quincy United.

Dixon golfer Jace Long has advanced to the second round of match play of the 2009 Missouri Amateur, beating Van Pierce of St. Albans 2-up on Thursday.

Long, a member of the Mizzou golf team, was the low qualifier after two rounds of medal play Tuesday and Wednesday. The low 64 scores advanced to the Amateur’s match-play format.

This morning Long was to meet Dean Merrill, of Kansas City, in the second round of match play. The third round of match play is slated for later this afternoon.

On Saturday the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds are scheduled. A 36-hole final is scheduled for Sunday.

Log Cabin Advance, Fairground Auto Plaza, On the Run @ Mobil and Hi-Tech Collision/Ron Dishman Towing were the first-half champions of the Rolla Men’s Softball League.

After four consecutive rained-out weeks the men’s league’s first half finally ended on Tuesday.The second half of the league is to begin next week.

Log Cabin Advance won the Orange Division title with a 6-1 record. Flett Enterprises, LLC was also 6-1 and the two teams split a pair of games. Log Cabin Advance won the net-run tiebreaker (runs scored minus runs allowed). Also in the Orange Division Imo’s Pizza was 3-4, Bruno’s/Mid-America Bank/Farmer’[s Insurance 3-4, Marine Detachment 2-5 and Fidelity 1-6.

In the Blue Division Fairground Auto Plaza won with a 6-1 mark while Country Mart was 6-2, Kingdom Kia 5-2, Pepsi 3-4, Alex Pizza 3-4, McDonald’s 2-5 and Big O Tires 0-7.

In the Red Division On the Run @ Mobil won with a perfect 7-0 mark while Newkirk Auction Co. was 6-1, Missouri Engineering 4-3, Creech Furniture 3-4, Extreme Life Rolla 3-4, Garner’s Heating & Ref. 2-5, Outsiders 2-5 and Cornerstone Pharmacy 1-6.

In the Green Division Hi-Tech Collision/Ron Dishman Towing had a 6-1 record while Tater Patch was 5-2, Dave’s-Rehab 5-3, Hoover Hogs 3-4, Remax 3-4, Butler Supply 3-4 and Frieda’s Closet 0-7.

It’s been nearly a decade since Cheryl Burnett roamed the sidelines as then-Southwest Missouri State women’s basketball head coach.

However, Burnett’s legacy remains strong in Missouri. One look around the Rolla High School gym Thursday afternoon confirmed that.

Burnett was in Rolla on Thursday to conduct a basketball clinic for participants in the Licking Team Camp, which is headquartered here. A large basketball session of the Licking Team Camp will be held today and Saturday in and around Rolla.

Licking Team Camp founder and organizer Dave Almany brought Burnett in for the camp and made it free for the campers. Thursday’s clinic turnout had to be capped at 75.

As blistering hot as it’s been the past couple of days, Jace Long has been even hotter.

Long mastered the field in the second round of stroke play on Wednesday at the 2009 Missouri Amateur golf tournament, firing 7-under par 64 to become the low qualifier for match play at St. Joseph Country Club.

Long, a former high school All-America from Dixon who recently completed his freshman year at Mizzou, finished the two qualifying rounds at 6-under 72-64--136.

Although scoring was a problem at times during the Rolla High School girls’ soccer team’s 2009 campaign, defense never was.

As a result record-setting Lady Bulldog goal-keeper Adrian Pogue received yet another award.
Pogue, a junior during the ‘09 season, has been selected to the Missouri State High School Coaches Association Class 3 All-State Third Team, it was announced this week.

“I really wasn’t expecting anything,” Pogue said of the all-state honor. “I worked pretty hard and our defense played well. Our offense played well too, but I thought we played really well as a team on the defensive end and it showed in our record.”

Also named to the all-region, all-district and all-conference teams, Pogue helped lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 16-7-3 overall record this past spring.

Missouri S&T's scoring performances at the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships have allowed the university's athletics program to finish in the top one-third of Division II in the final Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings for the 2008-09 season.

The S&T track teams had all of its competitors score at the national meet last month, resulting in 93.5 points to be added to the school's point total for the season. Missouri S&T finished with 233.5 points for the year, buoyed by the swimming team's third place showing at its national meet in March.

As a result, the final score put Missouri S&T in 91st place in the final standings, putting it among the top 31 percent of the 291 institutions competing at the NCAA Division II le

The Rolla Lady Bulldogs and Cuba played to a 2-2 tie in the first week of the Rolla Girls’ Fast-Pitch U-16 League on Wednesday, June 17 on Ber Juan Park’s North Field.

The Rolla-Cuba game was stopped in the top of the sixth inning due to the time limit.

Rolla got solo runs in the first and third innings, as Shakira Gonzales singled and scored a run in the first inning and Heather Jones reached on a fielder’s choice and scored in the third.
Maegen Shults started the game on the mound and Andrea Zalis finished up for Rolla.
Cuba scored both of its runs in the fifth inning.

Jones had two hits to lead the Rolla offense.

The two teams met again in a second game on June 17 and a group of younger Lady Bulldogs fell to Cuba 5-2.

Several area players, including Rolla High School’s Leah Parry, are scheduled to compete in the Gerald Pilz & Friends All-Star Basketball Games.

The Pilz All-Star event is scheduled to be held Saturday, July 11 on the campus of College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout. The girls’ all-star game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. with the boys’ game following around 8 p.m.

Parry, a 6-2 center from the Rolla High School girls’ basketball team, is scheduled to compete in the girls’ game. Frisco League players also expected to play in the girls’ contest include Crocker’s Kaitlin Bogle; Licking’s Camerin Heithold and Brandi Duncan; Laquey’s Shelbee Cowart, and Dixon’s Haley Yoakum.

The boys’ all-star game will also feature Frisco League players, including Laquey’s Michael Wilson and Kortez Britt; Plato’s Blake Kimrey.

Andy Satulla belted a home run, double, single and scored four times while Brandon Sparks had two hits and scored two runs as Panera Bread topped Mid-America Bank 13-5 Thursday in Rolla Youth Baseball/Softball (RYBS) Midget Division baseball action at Green Acres Park.

Chuck Whitson belted a double and single while Benjamin Shelton had a single and scored twice for Panera Bread. Easton Herron had two hits and scored twice while Jacob Adamson had three hits and Jacob Leverson had two hits for Mid-America Bank.

In other Midget Division games Thursday:

The Post Office of Mexico captured the national tournament berth through the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) slow-pitch women’s softball Class C Qualifier, held at Ber Juan Park on Saturday.

The Post Office swept through the seven-team, double-elimination event with a 4-0 record. As a result Post Office earns a berth to the ASA Class C National Tournament, to be held at Springfield, Mo. over Labor Day Weekend.

Springfield Thunder placed second in the event while the Springfield Crush were third.

Blackjack Roofing, Moreland Chiropractic and Missouri Cellular were the first-half winners of the adult slow-pitch Rolla Coed Softball League, which concluded the first half on Thursday at Ber Juan Park.

Blackjack Roofing won the Orange Division title with a 6-1 record while Beaver Slap, Cage Championships and Beverage Mart were all 5-2, Fidelity 3-4, Matt’s Steakhouse 2-5 and Dairy Queen and Wisdom Roofing both 1-6.
