Missouri Congressman Roy Blunt, Chairman of the GOP Health Care Solutions Group, today introduced HR 3987 to lower health care costs and improve quality of care for patients through enhanced health information technology.
Blunt will highlight a health care bill he supports each day for two weeks. Blunt’s Health Care Solutions are designed to improve what is working and fix what is broken in Americans’ health care.
“You can drive up to any gas station in the country, and they can immediately figure more out about your car than a doctor knows about a patient,” Blunt said. “A straightforward way to lower health care costs is by increasing the use of health information technology. Health IT will help doctors and health care providers share information about a patient’s history and prevent duplicative testing and other expensive, unnecessary medical mistakes,” Blunt said.
“My bill will open the information technology floodgates, allowing greater access to the hardware and software used for electronic exchange of clinical health information,” Blunt continued. “Enhanced health information technology will meet two of our benchmarks for good health care reform policy: lowering costs and fixing something that’s broken.”
Blunt’s plan will allow providers, such as hospitals and group practices, to supply physicians with hardware, software, or related services used for health information technology. This will in turn help doctors:
· Improve medical record keeping;
· Increase access to health care by reducing paperwork and speeding accurate communication;
· Save lives through quick access to lab and test results;
· Ensure patient diagnosis and treatments are delivered more quickly and more accurately.
Blunt continued: “Last week the Democrat leadership unveiled their 1,990-page government-takeover of health care. I’m taking two weeks to highlight a bill I’m for each day. Nothing I’m proposing is hidden in a 1,990-page bill, so let’s have an honest conversation about how to make health care more affordable and accessible for everyone, regardless of pre-existing condition. Enhanced health IT is an important part of that equation.”
Yesterday, Blunt highlighted HR 2607, the Small Business Healthcare Fairness Act, sponsored by Congressman Sam Johnson (Texas). HR 2607 expands access to health care coverage by creating Small Business Health Plans, which allow small businesses to band together to purchase coverage for their employees at a lower cost.
