Missouri Congressman Roy Blunt, Chairman of the GOP Health Care Solutions Group, has cosponsored HR 3218, introduced by Congressman John Shadegg (Ariz.).

Shadegg’s bill will provide individual Americans with a tax credit for purchasing their own health insurance on the open market, which will control costs and offer patients more options.

Blunt will highlight a health care bill he supports each day for two weeks.  Blunt’s Health Care Solutions are designed to improve what is working and fix what is broken in Americans’ health care.

“The overwhelming majority of Americans are happy with the health care coverage they have.  Under my friend John Shadegg’s plan, Americans with employer-provided care can keep it without any changes, and those who don’t have employer-provided insurance can buy their own plan with the same tax credit that a company receives,” Blunt said.  “This is a matter of fairness – to those who have employer-provided insurance and to those who want to buy their own.”

“In August, Americans across the nation cried out against the Pelosi health care reform bill, but Democrats ignored them.  Still, Republicans steadfastly offer commonsense repairs to our fragmented health care system – allowing people – not just businesses to be able to buy health care coverage tax free, ensuring coverage for all Americans, and offering high risk pools to insure those with pre-existing conditions,” Shadegg said.  “My bill, the Improving Health Care for All Americans Act, doesn’t throw out what works, it fixes what is broken.  It does not force Americans to give up the plan they have; rather, it allows them to take health care into their own hands.  It offers patient control and choice to drive down cost and drive up quality.”

Blunt continued:  “Last week the Democrat leadership unveiled their 2,000-plus-page government-takeover of health care.  I’m taking two weeks to highlight a bill I’m for each day.  Nothing I’m proposing is hidden in a 14-inch-thick bill, so let’s have an honest conversation about how to make health care more affordable and accessible for everyone, regardless of pre-existing condition.  Tax equity is an important part of that equation.”

Blunt introduced HR 3987 to lower health care costs and improve quality of care for patients through enhanced health information technology.
