Helen Grace Anderson, 91, of Rolla died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at home.
She was born Dec. 16, 1917, in Gillespie, Ill., the daughter of the late Roy O. and Verna Camp Hoehn. She married William Frank Rogers on June 1, 1941, in Gillespie, Ill. He was killed in action in North Africa in February 1943. She then married Francis Paul Anderson on July 23, 1946, he died in March of 2003.
Mrs. Anderson graduated from Blackburn College in Carlinville, Ill., in 1938. She received a teaching certificate entitling her to teach grades kindergarten through 10th, and taught elementary school for 32 years. She was a member of the White Hall First United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, and a 70- year member of the PEO sisterhood. She also served on the board of the White Hall Public Library for a number of years.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary Grace Moss and husband Randy H., of Rolla, Mo. and three grandsons, Benjamin Roy Moss of Cambridge, Mass., Andrew Paul Moss of Columbia, Mo., and Jeffrey Thomas Moss of Rolla, Mo. She is also survived by one brother, Howard "Buzz" Hoehn and his wife Doris of Frankfort, Ind.
Upon finding out that she had advanced-stage lung cancer at the age of 89, she decided to write her memoirs and approximately two years later completed her 100-page book entitled And Now I Am Grandma. She approached life with a great deal of enthusiasm and courage and was an inspiration to many who knew her.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, at the Null and Son Funeral Home of Rolla. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home, 234 N. Main St., White Hall, Ill. A visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 1 p.m. Interment will follow the service at the White Hall Cemetery In White Hall, Ill.
