Elmer E. Elrod, 78, of Rolla, Mo., passed away Thursday, June 18, 2009 at St. Clare Medical Center in Fenton, Mo.
Elmer was born January 18, 1922 in Maries County, Mo., near Freeburg, to William and Catherine Franklin Elrod. He grew up around the Belle and High Gate Mo., area with his two brothers and sisters. After serving in the Army during World War II, he returned home to Missouri and worked as a school teacher. He later married Verna Mae Leonard of Highgate, Mo.
Elmer worked with his wife Verna as real estate owners/brokers for United Country Real Estate, selling rural properties in the mid-Missouri area for over 30 years. Elmer had a passion for ranching. He enjoyed raising beef cattle, hunting, riding his John Deere Tractor, working on the farm and being outdoors whenever he could.
He is survived by his wife: Verna; three children: Gary Elrod and wife Cora of Kirksville, Mo., Dirk Elrod of Vichy, Mo., and Kirk Elrod and wife Debbie of Kansas City, Mo., and six grandchildren; Hannah Elrod of Gilbert, AZ., Ben Elrod and Kate Elrod of Kirksville, Mo., Natalie Elrod of Jefferson, City, Mo., Cassidy Elrod and Hillary Elrod of Kansas City, Mo., his brother: Lawrence Elrod and wife Marlene of Cuba, Mo.
In addition to his parents, Elmer is preceded in death by his brother Clyde Elrod (passed in 1986) and sisters Imogene Keeney (passed in 2004) and Opal Keeney (passed in 1941).
A visitation service will be Sunday, June 21 from 5-8 p.m. at Sassmann’s Funeral Home in Belle, Mo. The funeral service will be Monday, June 22 at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Rolla.
