America Fern Shackelfurd passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center at the age of 81.
She was born in Newburg, Mo., on July 6, 1927, to the late Glen and Katie (Roderick) Doyel.
In August, 1956, she married Charles Shackelfurd who preceded her in death on April 17, 1990.
Fern retired from Civil Service at Fort Leonard Wood after 31 years of service.  She then worked an additional 16 years at the Wiggins Abstract Co. in Rolla.
She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Tops Club, and the Rolla Moose Lodge.
Fern enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and Cardinal baseball, and was Ozzie Smith’s biggest fan.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Shackelfurd was preceded in death by two daughters, Katie Dillon and Corky Humphrey, two brothers, Bud and Sam Doyel, and two sisters, Edna Willy and Nora Macormic.
She will be greatly missed by her surviving family which includes three children, Kurt Godfrey and wife Denise, Donna Jones and husband Carl, and Chuck Shackelfurd and wife Vickie; one sister, Littie Burrus; sons-in-law, Walter Dillon and Donnie Humphrey; 13 grandchildren, Jeff Hoffman and friend Lana Moriarty, Stacey Jones and husband Scott, Sissy Borders and husband John, Nichole Turner and husband Brian, Tara England and husband Kelly, Misty Jones and friend Chris Lollis, Kim Godfrey, Jason Smith, D.J. Walker, Sammie Nichols and husband Andrew, Dannie Henson, Shawna Jones and friend Matt Maxwell, and Jacob Shackelfurd; 17 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
A funeral service for Fern Shackelfurd will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 20, 2009 at the Null & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Miller officiating. Interment will follow in Ozark Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 19, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or Lifeline Baptist Church.
