Robert Martin (Bob) Doerr, 81, of Rolla passed away Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 at home surrounded by his wife, four daughters, loving family and friends, from multiple myeloma.
Robert was born in St. Louis Mo., 05 Nov 1927, the older of two sons of the late Alfred J. and Emilie C. (Wangler) Doerr. On 31 Mar 1951, in St. Louis, he married and is survived by Vivian, daughter of the late Henry C. and Vivian O. (Dewes) Bokel. They had five daughters, Karen (John III [div.]) Hiatt of Columbia, Cheryl (Rob) Hoech of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the late Margaret Mary 'Peggy' Doerr, Christine Doerr of Columbia and Teresa (Timothy) Kassen of San Diego, 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
His brother, Eugene J (late Eve Highlander), died 15 May 2007 in Austin, TX.
Robert served in the Army Air Force during World War II, earned a B.S. at St. Louis U in 1950. In 1958, the Doerr family moved from St. Louis to Rolla MO; he was a metallurgy researcher at the Rolla, US Bureau of Mines from 1958 to 1985 where he published many technical papers. In 1972, he earned a M.S. at UMR, where he was active in Sigma Xi.
A devoted parishioner at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Bob was in the first group of lay Lectors and a Eucharistic Minister. He was founding member and served as president of the Missouri Nature Conservancy. An avid float-fisherman, he once canoed the entire Gasconade, solo. In retirement, he wrote and published on gardening and genealogy. From 1992 through 2009, he edited a quarterly, the Missouri State Genealogical Association Journal, and wrote a weekly newspaper column until 2004. Active in the Knights of Columbus, Bob loved helping the M.R. 'Tootsie Roll' drives to benefit the handicapped.
Thanks in part to Robert, one of nature's noblemen, we may enjoy some beautiful wild areas in the Ozarks, the rivers run a little cleaner, and the seeds of knowledge and discovery will continue to propagate.
Visitation for family and friends will be at St. Patrick Church, Saturday, October 24 at 9am, eulogy at 10:30. Mass will be at the Church that day, at 11 a.m.
Interment at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Sect. E, Grave 1446.
