The clock is ticking and time is running out. The deadline for reservations for the Annual Cancer Gala hosted by the Phelps County Unit of the American Cancer Society is here.
“We always have people who tell us that they are attending but on the weekend before our event, we still don’t have their reservations,” said longtime gala committee member Ivana Harris.
“It is as though this event is general admission,” she joked.
The fundraiser which has been helping with the fight against all types of cancer for more than 25 years, is a popular event in the Rolla community. “This is the one time of the year that you can wear your best bib and tucker,” Harris mused.
“Our event is special and the dress is special,” she said referring to the black tie is optional guideline.
“You can wear a dinner dress or a full-length evening gown and feel comfortable.”
The men wear suits and ties or tuxedos.
The gala is set for Saturday, Feb. 14, at Missouri S&T’s Havener Center.
Cocktails and appetizers will be served at 6 p.m. and a seated dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Following the dinner, guests will dance to the music provided by Travel Tunes. Mark Eudaly and Sue Eudaly have partnered with the gala for many years.
A silent auction will be held during the evening where guests will bid on original works of art, sporting packages, wines and gift baskets donated by area businesses and individuals.
Kent Bagnall, owner of Kent Jewelry, designs and donates an original piece of jewelry to match the theme of the event.
The jewelry piece becomes part of the silent auction. St. James Winery has donated eight cases of wine, including some of the newest varieties for the event.
The theme this year is P.S. I Love You. The goal is to raise $28,000. The event last year raised $36,000.
“We knew this would be a tough year,” Harris said, “but we are finding that no matter what folks are involved in our cause (prevails). Cancer touches so many lives.”
The gala benefits patients fighting all types of cancer. Proceeds are used for wigs, transportation to treatment, research, prevention educational programs, support groups, and nutritional supplements among many other services.
More than 400 cases of nutritional supplements were distributed free of charge to residents of Phelps County who were diagnosed with cancer.
“People are so generous,” said Harris. “We don’t pay for hardly anything to produce this event.”
The artistic director Susan Bowles manages to create the theme with almost no funding for the decor.
Committee members begin in early November working toward the goal of raising as much money for cancer patients and their families as they possibly can.
“Chartwells works with the group to create a menu that lends well to our theme and is unique and special,” said Harris. Mark Potrafka at the Havener Center partners with us to make this a great success.”
For those still planning to attend, their reservations must be received by the committee no later than noon Tuesday.
Reservations are $60 per person.
For information contact Ivana Harris at 573 426-4900 or Lonna Sowers at 364-8600.
Checks may be made payable to the American Cancer Society.
