A 32-year-old Army Reservist assigned temporarily to Fort Leonard Wood for training was killed Saturday in a skydiving accident at Rolla National Airport.

Staff Sgt. Daniel H. Smith, 32, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, was fatally wounded during the accident at the airport located in Maries County near the intersection of Missouri Route 28 and U.S. Route 63 about 13 miles north of Rolla at Vichy. Smith was assigned to the 391st Military Police Battalion of Columbus.

The accident that killed Smith, who was at Fort Leonard Wood for law-enforcement training, was unrelated to his Army training, according to Mike Alley Chief of External Communications for Fort Leonard Wood.

“He was here for advanced military police training, an investigations course,” Alley said. “He was in Week Five of a 10-week course.”

According to the Rolla Police report, at approximately 4:02 p.m. Saturday, officers were notified of a skydiving accident at the airport.

At the time of the accident Smith was acting as an independent contractor working as a cameraman for Skydive Rolla, also known as Adrenaline Air Play, LLC. According to the police report, Smith was an experienced skydiver.

Witnesses at the scene indicated that Smith was one of four skydivers who had been performing several jumps during the afternoon at the Rolla National Airport.

During the fourth jump of the day, Smith was filming other skydivers.

According to witnesses, Smith’s parachute was fully inflated when he made a turn while being too close to the ground to perform the maneuver. He plummeted to the ground and was later pronounced dead by Maries County Coroner David Martin.
