In the past year, Rolla resident Kiley Bush has been working hard at The Community Partnership Resale Shop.

After the Missouri S&T math major attended classes, he’d begin driving a truck to pick up donations, organize merchandise and help customers. All that pales in compare to Bush’s next job — the Peace Corps.

"I will be serving in Zambia," said Bush. "It's going to be a whole new world for me."

The Republic of Zambia is located in Southern Africa. There, Bush will be teaching students and learning about the culture.

"Kiley told us there might not be electricity or running water," said Resale Shop manager Maria Grant. "He'll be roughing it, for sure."

In 2003, the country's literacy rate was estimated to be 80.6%. Education in Zambia has two levels: basic education is offered to children for years 1-9, and the upper secondary level for years 10-12.

Tuition is only paid until the seventh year. Most children drop out after that because of the fees that must be paid.

Many children, in more remote areas like the one where Bush will be serving, have a hard time receiving educational opportunities. Bush's work will impact many young lives in the country.

Many of Bush's friends and family have offered to send packages and supplies and letters of encouragement, but he warns that getting these things to him will be very expensive.

"Postage to Zambia is incredibly high," said Bush, who is originally from the Kansas City area. "I'll be giving Maria (Grant) my new address, but sending things to me is difficult and costly. I'd appreciate letters or cards of encouragement, but I don't want to make people spend a lot of money on my behalf."

"We're going to miss him," said Grant. "Kiley's been such a good employee, and he's such a good person. It didn't surprise us at all that he'd join the Peace Corps after college. It's always been obvious that he cares about people and loves to help. He's definitely shown that spirit at the Partnership Resale Shop."

The Community Partnership Resale Shop is located on N. Bishop, in back of Big O Tires in Rolla. To donate furniture, clothing, or other items, you can drop them off at the store, at the after-hours donation boxes located outside the Resale Shop, at the Rolla Recycling Center, and on 10th St. in the Forum Dental parking lot. For larger donations, you can also call the Resale Shop for pick-up at 573-426-5923.
