Dan W. Brown won his first seat in the state House, outdistancing Democrat Wayne Bledsoe, taking 60 percent of the vote.
Brown captured 9,459 votes to Bledsoe’s 6,012. Constitution Party candidate Dennis Hustead garnered 284 votes.
Brown replaces Bob May, the popular Republican who had held the District 149 seat since 2000.
The district includes a sizable portion of Phelps County.
“Serving is what we have been doing for people and we desperately want to continue to serve people in Jefferson City,” Brown said Tuesday night. He added that he wants to see Rolla become an “economic powerhouse” in the region.
“Most importantly, I want to thank the voters of the 149th District,” continued Brown. “It means an awful lot that they put their trust in me. I will try and not let them down,” Brown said.
Bledsoe was disappointed but noted, “I think we had identified some of the major problems and offered some solutions, but the voters have chosen to go with the Republican candidate and we will support his efforts,” Bledsoe said.
Bledsoe also thanked his supporters.
During the campaign, Brown ran on a “common-sense government,” platform. He stressed his pro-family, pro-life, pro-small business approach.
Brown, 57, is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association; Missouri Veterinary Medical Association; National Rifle Association (NRA); Missouri Cattleman’s Association; Farm Bureau; and Missouri Farmers Association.
The Rolla resident has been married to Kathy Brown for 38 years. They have two children, Justin Brown and Danette Sherrell, and five grandchildren.
A veterinarian for 32 years in Rolla, he graduated from Houston High School. He has a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri in Columbia.
